Layton – William M. Sr., 95, of Elton, passed away on July 17, 2018 at Windber Medical Center. He was born on July 28, 1922 in Johnstown. Son of Percy S. and Sydney (Paul) Layton. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Thelma V. (Helsel) Layton; grandson, Robert William Layton; siblings, Seward “Bud”, Ardith Frye, and Homer Dean. Survived by loving children, Carol J. wife of John Zabrosky, Haymarket, VA, William M. Layton Jr., Johnstown, James A. married to the former Claudia Haddon, Washington, PA, Sandra E. Layton, Elton/Harrisburg and Gary W. and his fiancé, Brenda Leverknight, Johnstown; grandchildren, James A. Layton II, Washington, PA, Shannon Earle Layton and friend Christy Gray, West Alexander, PA, Kelly Layton and friend, Troy Bracken, Johnstown, Penny wife of George Mickolick, Beaverdale, Mara and Laura Zabrosky, both of Haymarket, VA, Johanna Zabrosky, FL, Emily Layton, Johnstown and step grandson, Thomas Haddon married to the former Jenniece Price, Sidman; great grandchildren, Kodey and Kaleb Mickolick, Wyatt Layton, and Evelyn Green; sister-in-law, Doris Layton, Johnstown, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was a US Army Veteran serving during WW II. He retired from Bethlehem Steel Freight Car Division and owner of Layton Farm. Bill was a member of Dunmyer Lutheran Church. He was also a charter member of Solomon Run Volunteer Fire Company and the Fire Police; Cambria County Fireman’s Association and the Fire Police Association; Richland American Legion Post #846; Charter member of the Greater Johnstown Saddle Club. Bill and his family have shown horses for over 60 years at the Cambria County Fair. Bill enjoyed horses, gardening, but especially loved his family. Friends received from 3-7 p.m. Friday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland and from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Dunmyer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. William G. Beck, Pastor. Interment will be at Dunmyer Cemetery. The Family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to Dunmyer Lutheran Church, 547 School House Road, Johnstown, PA 15904 in memory of William.
