Richard O. "Dick" Hughes

HUGHES---Richard “Dick”, 91, of San Antonio, Texas, went to be with the Lord and his loving wife, Dorothy (McManus) Hughes on May 4, 2022.  Richard was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, one of seven children to Richard O. and Florence (Sell) Hughes on November 21, 1930.  He is survived by his two sons, Robert (Ashley) Hughes of San Antonio, Texas, and Richard (Wenli Li) Hughes, of Pasadena, California, and three grandchildren, Justin, of Huntington, Pennsylvania, Jennifer, of Titusville, Florida, and Lincoln of San Antonio, Texas. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy (McManus), his brothers Rupert, Calvin, George, Dean, and Lloyd, and his sister Ardythe Williams.  When growing up in the Moxham, Richard was a fan of the Johnstown Jets and used to watch games at the Johnstown War Memorial.   Richard served in the US Navy aboard the USS Des Moines (CA-134), the lead ship of the US Navy heavy cruisers.  He met his wife Dorothy while working as a union representative (IBEW 1635) for GTE, while Dorothy was working for management.  They were married on April 12, 1961. Richard worked for GTE (General Telephone, now Verizon) for 44 years, working as a switchman and trouble shooter. Once both Richard and Dorothy retired from their work, they became very active square dancers in Johnstown, and then later in south Texas when living in Pharr.  They frequently gave dancing demonstrations and travelled all over the country to square dance.  Richard was a member of Grove Avenue United Methodist Church his entire life. The family will receive friends from Noon until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2022 at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, with Pastor Carol Hickman officiating.
