Lloyd S. Hughes

Lloyd S. “Mac”, 84, of Richland, passed away on November 3, 2019, at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital. Lloyd was born in Johnstown, the sixth of seven children of Richard O. and Florence (Sell) Hughes on May 6, 1935. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice (Adams) Hughes, his four children: Richard (Melodee) Hughes of Valrico, Florida, Edward Hughes of State College, Pennsylvania, Karen (Michael) Lowe of Grand Haven, Michigan, and James (Amy) Hughes of Princeton, Illinois; his eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and his brother Richard of Pharr, Texas. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Rupert, Calvin, George, and Dean, his sister Ardythe Williams, and grandchild Adam. Lloyd grew up in Moxham and graduated from Johnstown High in 1953. He met the love of his life two years later and they were married in 1957, just before he started work at Bethlehem Steel as a draftsman.  Lloyd continued to advance at Bethlehem and the family traveled around the mid-west including Milwaukee, Chicago, and Detroit. After eleven years of night school while working a full time job and never neglecting his family, Lloyd received his degree in Civil Engineering and was asked to take on the responsibilities as District Engineer for the mid-west Region for Bethlehem Steel. After leaving Bethlehem, Lloyd worked for Barker Steel and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) before he and Alice retired in Johnstown in 1997. Lloyd was a member of Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, the American Society of Professional Engineers, Elks Lodge 175, and Masonic Lodge 278. Friends and family will be received 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Harris Funeral Home 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, where service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Interment at St. John’s Cemetery Geistown. Online condolences may posted to www.wharrisfuneralhome.com .
