Forty years ago Sgt Heilman was exactly the kind of law enforcement officer the nation neecs so badly today. He was humane, soft spoken, tough when the situation required that and calm when chaos threatened to erupt. He was a mentor for me and countless other police officers. It was an honor to have known him and a privilege to have worn a badge with him. We will not see his like again soon.

Sgt. Heilmann was one of my role models, a great police officer and more importantly a great family man. He truly knew how to balance both the job and home life. Even though I left the department over thirty years ago, I will never forget his mentorship. RIP Jimmy
