Betty M. Mottern
Mottern – Betty M., 84, Richland, died January 21, 2017, peacefully at Arbutus Park Manor, surrounded by loving family. Born September 16, 1932, in Mt. Carmel, PA, daughter of Reverend John and Elizabeth (Hulka) Janisak. Preceded in death by parents; and sons Jeffrey and Daniel Mottern. Survived by her husband, D. Quay Mottern; son, Dr. Richard Mottern married to Nina; and daughters, Barbara Stephenson married to Lester; Susan Peters married to Richard; and Kathleen Mottern; sister, JoAnn Hopkins; brother, John Janisak and wife, Deborah; and grandchildren, Ben and Alex Mottern and Devin-Marie Brown. Betty was a former member of St. John Slovak Lutheran Church in Johnstown where she served as the church organist for 30 years. She was an accomplished pianist and started playing the organ at age 11 as the organist at St. Matthew in Mt. Carmel, PA. She served as the accompanist of the Mt. Carmel Mens Chorus during high school. She attended the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown Campus. She enjoyed music, especially the great hymns of the church, was an avid reader, wonderful cook and gardener. She was a great church worker and member of the Dorcas Society. But most of all she was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Friends will be received from 4-7 PM Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, where funeral service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday. Entombment will take place at Richland Cemetery Mausoleum. The family would like to thank the staff at Arbutus Park Manor and Windber Hospice for the kind and loving care they gave to Betty during her illness.
