Biber, Elgene J., “Gene”, 71, of Richland Township, passed away on February 1, 2010 at Windber Hospice. He was born on August 27, 1938 in Johnstown. Son of John and Virginia R. Biber. Preceded in death by parents; brothers-in-law, Francis S. Hoffman and Stephen M. Slavik and a sister-in-law, Loretta A. Slavick. Survived by loving wife of 52years, Evelyn R. (Slavik) Biber; sisters-in-law, Margaret Hoffman, Johnstown, Danielle Slavik, CA and Rosemary wife of Paul Eck, Palmyra, PA; brother-in-law, Richard Slavick, Johnstown; extended family, Joseph (Dianne) Fox and sons, Joseph Jr. and Michael Fox all of Portage, Scott (Michelle) Boyd, and sons, Travis and Logan Boyd, all of Johnstown and Matthew Birus and his children, Matthew, Marcia and Melissa; long time friends, Edward Hudak, Beaverdale and Peggy Trevenen, Johnstown; nieces, Laurie wife of Harry Lint, Palmyra, PA, Victoria wife of Charles Lermineau, Beaverdale and Valerie wife of Randolph Weaver, CA; grandnephews, Robert Lint, Palmyra, PA and Brandon Weaver, CA; grandniece, Haley Weaver, CA and brother, John L. Biber, CA; nephews, John and Travis Biber, CA; nieces, Katheryn Biber and Kerri Karas both of CA. Gene was a graduate of Ferndale High School. He was a US Navy Veteran. Gene was the former owner and operator of the Lorain Hotel. He later was employed as a Police Officer in the Boroughs of Gallitzin and Tunnel Hill. Gene was also a Constable for Lorain Borough and served as Deputy Sherriff for Cambria County from where he retired. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Geistown, where he was an usher for over 29 years at the 5 P.M. Saturday Mass. Gene was one of the original founders of the Johnstown Flying Club, where he held the office of Vice President. He was also a member of the Deputy Sherriff’s Association; BPOE #175; PNA, Moxham and SNPJ # 749; 3rd Degree, Knights of Columbus of the Alleghenies; 4th Degree, All Saints Assembly; Portage Area Cruisers Car Club; South Fork Rifle Club; the Cambria County Retired Employees Association and the Mainline Police Association. Gene enjoyed the company of his friends, science fiction movies and was a computer enthusiast. He will be remembered as a kind and loving husband and friend. Friends received 3-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral mass will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday at St Benedict Catholic Church, Father David S. Peles. Committal will be at Grandview Cemetery with military rites conducted by Menoher Post #155 VFW Ritual Team.
